Child count, progress, parent status and parent assignee as Jira fields
A Jira Cloud app that maintains six read-only fields on every work item, so you can find work with no sub-tasks, parents that are ready to close, and children by their parent's status or owner, using plain JQL. Runs entirely inside Atlassian's infrastructure. No servers of ours, no analytics.
The six fields
| Field | Type | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Child count | Number | Number of child work items: sub-tasks, or work items whose parent is this one (for example the children of an epic) |
| Open child count | Number | Children that are not in a Done status category |
| Child progress % | Number | Share of children in a Done status category, 0 to 100. Empty when there are no children |
| Parent status | Text | Status name of the parent |
| Parent status category | Text | To Do, In Progress or Done, so one query works across different workflows |
| Parent assignee | User | Assignee of the parent |
What you can do with them
- Work with no breakdown:
"Child count" = 0 AND issuetype = Story. - Parents ready to close:
"Open child count" = 0 AND "Child count" > 0 AND statusCategory != Done. - Open children of finished parents:
"Parent status category" = Done AND statusCategory != Done. - Everything under parents you own:
"Parent assignee" = currentUser(). - Add any of the six as columns in list views and saved filters, show them in dashboards, and include them in CSV exports.
How it works
- On install, existing work items are backfilled in pages, newest first, without any automation rule or rule-run quota.
- When a work item is created, changes status, is reassigned or is moved to another parent, the affected fields update within seconds. Other edits are ignored.
- A nightly job repairs work items updated in the last two days, and their parents, in case an event was missed.
- Built on Atlassian Forge with no external egress.
Good to know
- Jira creates app fields once the site has at least one company-managed project (space). Add the fields to the screens or views where you want them.
- The two text fields match exactly: write
"Parent status" = "In Progress", not~. - Up to 2,000 children are counted per parent.
- When a child is deleted, the parent's counts are corrected at the latest by the nightly repair.
- The three parent fields live on the child and follow the child's permissions. See the privacy notice if you use issue security levels.
Pricing
Free for sites with up to 10 users. Above that, priced per user per month through the Atlassian Marketplace, with Atlassian's standard 30-day free evaluation. Billing, invoices, and cancellation are handled by Atlassian.
Permissions
read:jira-work to read parent, status, assignee, type and children of work items and the field list; write:app-data:jira to write its own six fields; storage:app for two small internal records. Details in the privacy notice.

Writing JQL for these fields?
Our free Jira Cloud JQL guides show working queries step by step, and the JQL Cookbook (ours, paid, pay what you want from $12) collects 66 copy-paste queries, each checked against Jira Cloud's strict parser.
