Blocker count and open blocker count as Jira fields
Jira lets you link work items as "is blocked by", but it cannot tell you whether those blockers are still open. This Jira Cloud app keeps four read-only number fields current on every work item so you can search, sort and report on it. Runs entirely inside Atlassian's infrastructure. No servers of ours, no analytics.
The four fields
| Field | Type | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Blocker count | Number | Work items linked as blocking this one ("is blocked by" links) |
| Open blocker count | Number | Blockers that are not in a Done status category |
| Blocks count | Number | Work items this one blocks ("blocks" links) |
| Open blocks count | Number | Work items this one blocks that are not in a Done status category |
What you can do with them
- Work whose blockers are all cleared:
"Blocker count" > 0 AND "Open blocker count" = 0 AND statusCategory != Done. - Blocked work in the current sprint:
"Open blocker count" > 0 AND sprint in openSprints(). - What is holding up the most work:
"Open blocks count" > 0 ORDER BY "Open blocks count" DESC. - Add any of the four as columns in list views and saved filters, show them in dashboards, and include them in CSV exports.
How it works
- On install, existing work items are backfilled in pages, newest first, without any automation rule or rule-run quota.
- When a link is added or removed, or a linked work item changes status, the affected work items update within seconds.
- A nightly job repairs work items updated in the last two days, and the work items linked to them, in case an event was missed.
- Built on Atlassian Forge with no external egress. The app never creates or removes links.
Good to know
- Counts use link types whose inward description contains "blocked by" (Jira's default Blocks type, and renamed copies that keep the phrase).
- Jira creates app fields once the site has at least one company-managed project (space). Add the fields to the screens or views where you want them.
- Counts include linked work items a viewer may not be able to see. See the privacy notice.
- Up to 200 linked work items are refreshed per status change.
Pricing
